BIO:
Mark’s love for music began when he was given an electric guitar and drumset by his musically-inclined father. At ten years old, he pounded at his drums until his neighbors threw stones at his house. He fell in love with The Beatles and tried to imitate Ringo’s playful drumming, which landed him in various rock bands as a drummer (and later on a guitarist). At age 16, he discovered punk rock and became active in its’ fierce DIY ethics. Eventually, he grew out of it and looked for other sources of inspiration, finding it in electronica. He remembers listening to New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle” and The Breakfast Club’s “A Rico Mambo” and wondering how the sounds were made. When he learned more about synthesizers, sequencers, and computer music, Cocolulu came into being. Mark was set on making a project that would involve these toys and gadgets. From the summer of 2006 until present, he records all his songs using the computer and uploads most of them on music networking sites. Currently, he is working with various artists doing remixes and collaborations, while making new tracks.
INFLUENCES:
He likes to listen to a lot of music, regardless of genres, but picks out Ronnie Martin (Joy Electric) and Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Postal Service, Figurine) as his main influences. He’s also fond of the New Romantic Era (Human League, Pet Shop Boys, Japan, etc.) which a lot of people say has that tinge to his songs. Contemporary electronica and its’ various sub-genres has also inspired him, as well as the music from the old video games and toys that he played with as a kid.
